Standing Rock 10K Trail Run
An informal trail run near Jumbo Mountain will be held on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. The run will go through BLM land to the NW shoulder of Jumbo Mountain east of Paonia. This is not a competitive event, in fact the only award will go to last place; the person who worked the hardest to finish. Standing Rock is a run meant to highlight the simple joy of running trails.
The trail will follow an old two track road gradually gaining elevation up the northeast shoulder of Jumbo to an elevation of 7000 feet. From the shoulder the course will traverse to a well-maintained bike trail featuring a gradual switchback decent back to town with awesome views of our valley, the West Elks, and Grand Mesa.
Standing Rock is for runners in good condition, the length is estimated at 6.2 miles with a 1000 foot elevation gain. We will start in Apple Valley Park at the Gazebo. The course is a loop, not out and back, so runners need to pay attention to trail markings. No water or aid stations will be provided, runners are encouraged to carry their own water or nourishment.
There is no entry fee. It is suggested that you have trained for five weeks at least 20 miles a week. The Standing Rock is limited to 15 runners. For further details or to sign up, send an an e-mail to Dave (shinumo@tds.net) please put "Standing Rock" in the subject line.
